A sauna is part appliance, part room, and part ritual. Start with the experience you want, then work backward through space, power, materials, and budget.
Traditional or infrared?
A traditional sauna heats the room, usually with an electric heater and stones. Temperatures commonly feel hotter, and compatible heaters allow brief bursts of humidity when water is ladled onto the stones.
Infrared cabins use emitters to warm the body more directly while the surrounding air stays cooler. They often plug into simpler electrical service, warm up differently, and do not offer the same steam ritual.
Traditional
Hotter room, classic sauna character, and often a 240V dedicated circuit.
Infrared
Lower ambient heat, radiant warmth, and some compact models designed for 120V service.
Cabin, barrel, or built-in room?
Indoor cabins are self-contained and predictable. Outdoor cabins offer conventional walls and generous headroom. Barrels have an iconic silhouette and compact air volume. A built-in sauna gives the most design freedom, but requires coordinated framing, insulation, vapor control, ventilation, and finish work.
Do not choose from exterior dimensions alone. Compare usable bench length, upper-bench height, door swing, heater clearances, and the path from the delivery point to the final location.
Size for bodies, not labels
Capacity labels assume close seating. If you want to recline, allow bench length for the tallest regular user. Couples often prefer more room than a compact two-person label suggests.
- Record the exact pad or floor dimensions.
- Include overhead clearance and service access.
- Decide whether sitting, reclining, or both matter.
- Plan the walk to and from the house in every season.
Plan power before delivery
Many traditional heaters and larger infrared cabins require a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Some compact infrared units use a dedicated 120V outlet. Never assume an existing receptacle is sufficient because the plug appears to fit.
Ask an electrician to confirm panel capacity, circuit path, disconnect requirements, wet-location rules, and whether a permit is required. Get the product-specific electrical sheet before rough-in.
Wood is more than a color
Cedar is aromatic, dimensionally stable, and naturally resistant to decay. Thermally modified woods gain stability and a deeper tone through heat treatment. Hemlock and spruce offer a quieter scent and lighter appearance. Clear grade material and thoughtful joinery often matter more than species alone.
Outdoor siting needs a real plan
Place an outdoor sauna on a level, load-capable surface with positive drainage. Consider prevailing wind, privacy, the electrical trench, roof runoff, walking surfaces, and the distance from a shower or plunge. Local setbacks and neighborhood rules may apply.
What drives the price
Price rises with capacity, heater output, wood grade, glazing, insulation, controls, lighting, structural detailing, and whether the unit arrives assembled or as a kit. The least expensive sauna is not a bargain if its power needs or delivery path do not work for your property.
